Video game releases for November 2017

Here are the top video game releases for the month of November 2017. Also, check out the list we put together of our most anticipated games of 2017 and subscribe to Polygon's YouTube channel for more gaming videos. And here are the free games you get this month with an Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus subscriptions.

NOVEMBER 3:

Call of Duty: WWII (PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One) — Call of Duty is going back to its roots with Sledgehammer Games’ first game since Advanced Warfare. The co-founder and co-studio head, Michael Condrey, along with others, spoke with us on the amount of attention they were giving the story, the setting and how the events of the war shaped our world. Here’s the first campaign trailer.

NOVEMBER 7:

Nioh: Complete Edition (Windows PC) — Nioh takes place in a fictionalized version of feudal Japan where mythological creatures stalk the land alongside samurai and ninja. Players enter this strange world in the shoes of William, a Westerner who finds himself tossed into the middle of the conflicts of a tumultuous land. Nioh: Complete Edition, will include the original game and its three expansions: Dragon of the North, Defiant Honourand Bloodshed’s End.

The PC version will include two visual presentation modes: Action Mode, which aims for a stable 60 fps frame rate, and Movie Mode, a “cinematic” option with a 4K display resolution.

Sonic Forces (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One) — It’s basically the Sonic fandom in video game form, so yeah, it’s weird. And just like when you Google anything + Sonic, there’s some gambling involved in the game, too. Here’s a trailer.

NOVEMBER 10:

Doom (Nintendo Switch) — Polygon’s Editor-in-Chief, Chris Grant, predicts the future with his comments on Polygon’s #1 game of the year in 2016.

“I’m not the first person to point this out, but Doom reminds me a lot of… a Nintendo game. Don’t worry about the weird settings, or the nonsensical plot, or the silly narrative; this is a game built around its mechanics. This was true of the first Doom (1993) as well; while worried adults saw pentagrams and demons and blood (“It’s so realistic!”), I only cared about the mechanics, the levels, the WADs. The creativity. Forget about the faux subversion; that spark is on full display in this Doom.”

Mario Party: The Top 100 (Nintendo 3DS) — The Mario Party franchise began in 1998 with the original Mario Party, and the most recent proper entry was Mario Party 10, which was released on Wii U in 2015. Mario Party: The Top 100 will feature a curated collection of the 100 best minigames from all 10 Mario Party games on home consoles. Here’s the announcement trailer.

Need for Speed Payback (PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One) — The campaign in Need for Speed Payback will allow players to drive as three different characters — Tyler, the Racer; Mac, the Showman; and Jess, the Wheelman — who team up to get revenge on The House, a cartel that runs the criminal underworld of the fictional city of Fortune Valley. EA is promising “intense heist missions, high stakes car battles, epic cop pursuits and jaw dropping set pieces,” which suggests that Ghost Games is taking inspiration from the lovably bonkers world of the Fast and Furious franchise. NOVEMBER 14:

L.A. Noire (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) — The Nintendo Switch port will cost an extra $10 and include the original game and its downloadable content, plus console-specific features. The Switch release will feature gyroscopic, gesture-based controls and HD rumble, as well as “new wide and over-the-shoulder camera angles, plus contextual touch screen controls for portable detective work,” Rockstar said.

The versions of L.A. Noire for PS4 and Xbox One, which also include the original game and all downloadable content, boast their own improvements: enhanced lighting and clouds, new cinematic camera angles and high resolution textures. Rockstar is also supporting 4K resolution for L.A. Noire on PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X. Here’s why Herschel Biggs is Owen’s favorite video game character of all time.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One) — Settings for the action in Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 include locales such as New York City in the year 2099, ancient Egypt and the Old West, along with places from Marvel Comics lore like Sakaar, the home of the Planet Hulk storyline. Players will be able to step into the shoes of characters such as Spider-Man 2099, Cowboy Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, the Green Goblin and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 will also offer a new mode that will allow four players to battle with superheroes either competitively or cooperatively. NOVEMBER 17:

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (Nintendo 3DS) — Ultra Sun and Ultra Moonreturn players to the tropical region, which has since been robbed of all of its light. The mysterious legendary monster Necrozma has something to do with it, as do the even stranger Ultra Beasts. It’s up to Pokémon trainers — and some familiar faces from last year’s Pokémon Sun and Moon, like Lillie and Island Master Hala — to help restore the region to its former state.

It’s clear that darkness is central to the new games, especially after watching this extremely dramatic trailer. Pokémon has rarely been known for its stories, but Ultra Sunand Ultra Moon appear to follow in the tradition set by their predecessors by going heavy on the narrative. And this narrative, clearly, gets intense. An interview in this week’s Famitsu even suggests that the script for these games is twice as long as that of Sun and Moon, which were already far more dialogue-filled than previous Pokémon games.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 (PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One) — Star Wars Battlefront 2’s single-player trailer quickly sets up the story: The Emperor is dead after the destruction of the second Death Star, and Imperial Commander Iden Versio is going to do her part to exact revenge on the Rebellion.

While the rest of the trailer is dripping with classic Star Wars imagery — TIE Fighters, X-Wings, AT-ATs and the Millennium Falcon all appear — the single-player campaign teaser also reinforces that this is a Star Wars game of multiple eras. There are cameos from Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia, as we knew them in the original trilogy, as well as appearances from Maz Kanata and Kylo Ren from the sequel era. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim (Nintendo Switch) — Here’s Bethesda’s official description of the Switch version of Skyrim:

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for the Nintendo Switch includes all-new gameplay features like motion controls for combat and lockpicking, outfits and gear from The Legend of Zelda. Take down enemies with the Master Sword, protect yourself with the Hylian Shield or look heroic in the Champion’s Tunic. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for the Nintendo Switch also includes all official add-ons: Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn. Plus tap other compatible amiibo to gain additional loot including those from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild series, 30th Anniversary - The Legend of Zelda series, Super Smash Bros. series, and The Legend of Zelda series.

The Sims 4 (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) — Our review of The Sims 4 praised the game for its accessibility and streamlined design tool sets, for both Sims and their homes. We were disappointed by the experiences it provided for Sims at launch, though that has been buttressed by three expansions and numerous content packs since.

The Sims 4 will deliver periodic game update and additional content releases after launch, EA said in a statement. Those who pre-order it will get the "Perfect Patio Stuff" pack that includes outdoor hot tubs for Sim living, among other things. A deluxe Party Edition adds even more outdoor accoutrements and will be delivered Nov. 14. Subscribers to EA Access on Xbox One can play The Sims 4 free from Nov. 9 to Nov. 17. Their progress will carry over to the main game should they choose to purchase the full title.

NOVEMBER 21:

The Inpatient (PlayStation VR) — Supermassive Games, the studio that developed 2015’s Until Dawn, decided that looking at a mere TV wasn’t terrifying enough, so they began development on the PlayStation VR exclusive The Inpatient.

Here’s the overview from Sony:

Discover who you are before it’s too late in The Inpatient; a PS VR Exclusive set in the Blackwood Sanatorium, over 60 years prior to the 2016 BAFTA award-winning Until Dawn.

With deep immersion that places you in the game, you take on the role of an amnesiac inpatient who must find out who you are and why you are in the Sanatorium. With a branching narrative, and different endings; every choice you make can drastically affect the way the game plays out.

NOVEMBER 28:

Resident Evil Revelations (Nintendo Switch) — The Nintendo Switch versions of Resident Evil Revelations and Resident Evil Revelations 2 will include a pair of minigames exclusive to that version. One of those minigames, Ghouls ‘n Homunculi, is a Resident Evil-infused homage to Capcom classic Ghosts ‘n Goblins. The original Resident Evil Revelations on Switch will include a minigame of its own that, while admittedly less impressive, is interesting in the way that it will be played. Titled Ghost Ship Panic, the game is a score attack target shooter. Players shoot Resident Evil Revelations’ brand of ooze zombies in an effort to build up combos and earn points.
